Massachusetts Ignition Interlock Program

February 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Back in October of 2005, Massachusetts created a new law (Melanie’s Law) to target repeat offenders of the state’s Operating Under the Influence laws (the equivalent of DUI or DWI). These laws required repeat drunk driving offenders to install an ignition interlock device before they could be granted a hardship driver’s license or get their license re-instated.

The ignition interlock device works by not allowing a vehicle to start if it detects a blood alcohol content level above .02%. In order for the driver to start his vehicle, he must first blow into the device which will determine the alcohol level.

After more than two years of the drinking and driving law in Massachusetts, more than 2,800 repeat offenders are registered in the program. The state claims that this law has led to more arrests of drunk drivers, and they tend to comply with chemical testing more often now.
